"howabout"ischinglish!!!

inmy10yearsofteaching,thisisprobablythemostcommon(常见的)mistakeihear,sometimeshearingitseveraltimesaday.iunderstandtheconfusion(困惑).inchinese,weliketosay“___怎么样?”forexample,新老师怎么样,or“howaboutthenewteacher?”

theproblemis,inenglish,wedon’tsay“howabout.”ithinkthereasonsomanychinesestudentssaythisisbecausetheyrememberitfromthesentence“howaboutyou?”later,iwillexplainwhyitisoktosayonlyinthissentence.

toproperly(正确的，恰当的)ask怎么样,wehavetousethe“be”verb.sointheexampleabove,youshouldsay“howisthenewteacher?”ifyouwanttoaskyourfriend“你昨天看的电影怎么样”,youwouldsay“howwasthemovielastnight?”

okok,butwecansay“howaboutyou?”right?sowhyisitokinthissentence?it’sbecauseoneoftheonlytimes(只有在这个情况下)youcansay“about”isinafollow-upquestion.ifyouremember,thequestionbefore“howaboutyou?”is“howareyou?”that’sthe“be”verb.inthereply“i’mfinethanks,howaboutyou?”well,youcansee“about”isusedinthesecond(followup)question.（“about”通常都是伴随着之前一个问题、作为第二个问句来表示“那你觉得...怎么样？”）

anotherexample：

woodie:hey,youwannagetabeerafterworktoday?

denzel:naw,idon’treallylikebeer.

woodie:ok,howaboutwhiskeythen?

steve:youwatchalotofmoviesright?howwasthenewresidentevil(生化危机)movie?

malloy:itsucked!(太烂了)

steve:oh…howaboutbeautyandthebeast(美女与野兽)?

malloy:itwasgreat!

theonlyothertime“howabout”isokiswhenwearemakingasuggestion(当我们在提供建议时).

forexample:

ethel:mybodyissosoreafterexercisingalldaytoday.

connie:howaboutwegogetamassagetogether?

tomakeitsimple,justtrytoremember,wheneveryouwanttoasksomeone“___怎么样”,justusethe“be”verb(is,are,was,etc),andyoushouldbefine.so…howwasmyexplanation?

中文小总结：

如果想单独问“xxx怎么样”，应该用“how+be动词（is,are,was...）”的句式提问

如果想进一步提出不同选项、建议，可以用“howabout...”，但是一定有上文做前提！

没人会听史蒂夫的建议了，因为那些建议往往都是没用的。
